About Sports Turf Specialties

Western Pennsylvania is known for the number and quality of professional, semi-pro, scholastic and community athletic teams that play and compete across our region. The region is also continually recognized across the U.S. as student athletes become professional athletes and, in many cases, sports legends. Dan Marino, Joe Namath, Joe Montana are just a few of the scores of athletes who, as children, played on local fields. And who knows what future sports legends are scoring touchdowns, hitting home runs and kicking goals down the street today?

Like many Pittsburghers, husband and wife Raymond and LeAnn Sprow grew up playing and watching sports. Along the way, they developed a strong interest in what made some athletic facilities better that others. They learned as much as could be learned about the nuances of athletic field construction. The next step was to build the fields.

In 1985, they established Sports Turf Specialties as a way to provide professional and semi-pro sports teams, schools and communities with quality athletic fields. It didn't take long before the specialists became recognized experts in athletic field design, installation, renovaton and troubleshooting. Today, many of the best athletic playing surfaces in western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and parts of West Virginia are in place, thanks to Ray and LeAnn's vision and expertise. And, as the company's reputation for excellence has grown, STS' world class team of turf and field experts, led by the Sprows, continues to be hired by athletic directors and others who demand quality and excellence in ther own playing surfaces and facilities.
